E-Waste Disposal Options

The Federal Government has recently passed Product Stewardship legislation that will see a free television and computer recycling schemerolled out across the country from 1 July 2012.
The scheme will be led and funded by the industry (importers and local manufacturers) under the new product stewardship arrangements. This means that from 1 July next year, residents will be able to drop off their old computers and televisions at yet-to-be-determined collection points at no cost.
We are hopeful that a facility will be available in the Shellharbour LGA, but if not residents will be able to access free drop off points in Wollongong.
What can I do in the meantime?
1. If your television or computer is still in good working order you can extend its useful life by finding someone else who wants it. Contact your friends, second-hand shops or a charity to find out if they are interested in taking your unwanted equipment.
The following organisations accept working computers for refurbishment and redistribution for community reuse.
Computer Bank NSW (Fairy Meadow) - flat screen monitors only (no CRT) - ph: 4284 8676
Mission Australia (Bellambi) - no charge for drop off (must be less than 5 years old) - ph: 4286 6100
It's best to give them a call first to check to their terms and conditions.
2. Where no one is able to use your television or computer, recycling is the next best option. Council accepts television and computers for recycling at the Dunmore Recycling & Waste Disposal Depot. Fees apply. Your tipping fee contributes to the cost of separating the items into their recoverable components including glass, plastics, copper and other metals.
3. If you aren't able to re-use or recycle your unwanted televisions and computers, store them out of the weather until the free take-back scheme becomes available next year.
